Regional Accreditor Concerned About Quality of Educational Programs

According to the public disclosure, on June 30, 2016, the HLC Board of Trustees placed the University on Notice concluding that the University is at risk of being out of compliance with the
following Criteria for Accreditation:

  • Criterion Four, Core Component 4.A “the institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs,”
  • Criterion Four, Core Component 4.B “the institution demonstrates a commitment to educational achievement and improvement through ongoing assessment of student learning,”
  • Criterion Five, Core Component 5.C “the institution engages in systematic and integrated planning.”

According to the HLC, NOTICE is a public status signifying that an accredited institution is at risk of being out of compliance with one or more of HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation. The period of Notice is not more than two years, commencing with the date that the HLC Board of Trustees placed the institution on Notice.

During the Notice period, the institution remains accredited and it has the opportunity to remedy the concerns that led to the Notice sanction.

According to the HLC, students enrolled at an institution on NOTICE and interested in pursuing a higher degree or transferring should contact any institution they plan to attend in the future to confirm the institution’s admission and transfer policies.

According to the Disclosure, the University was required to file a Notice Report no later than December 2017, providing evidence that the University is no longer at risk of non-compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation identified in this action and that it has ameliorated issues that led to the Notice sanction.

Then, prior to June 2018, the University was required to host a Focused Visit to validate contents of the Notice Report.

At its meeting in June 2018, the HLC Board will review related materials to determine whether the institution has demonstrated that it is no longer at risk for non-compliance with the Criteria for
Accreditation identified in this action and whether Notice can be removed, or the University has not demonstrated compliance and other action may be appropriate.

Adding to NUHS accreditation woes, recently NUHS two chiropractic programs were placed on PROBATION by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE). On February 2, 2018 according to the public disclosure from the CCE, the Council took this action “. . . due to noncompliance concerns related to program effectiveness, meta- competency assessment and student performance success rates.”

Given the fact that a second accrediting agency has placed the school on PROBATION while its already on NOTICE - it is expected that the HLC will have continued concerns with NUHS accreditation status.
