Haas Presents Foundation Update on Immunity Project During Sherman Lyceum

Integrative Review of Literature is Latest Step in Mutlipronged Project

Amy Haas DC, Ph.D was a Plenary speaker at Sherman College's 50th Anniversary Lyceum this past week and used her time in front of a packed audience to review her efforts to conduct an integrative review of the literature on the role of chiropractic on immune function.

The Foundation for Vertebral Subluxation (FVS) is conducting a multi-pronged project on the role of chiropractic on immune function and Dr. Haas is currently conducting a broad review of the literature on the topic as part of that project.

The multi-pronged project to address questions related to the role of chiropractic in immune function has multiple parts including the completion of a scoping review of chiropractic, immunity and biomarkers, a comprehensive, integrative review of the scientific literature on chiropractic and immunity, the development of research protocols, feasibility studies, development of a prospective longitudinal health outcomes study, a research conference, and the development of policy and best practice statements for practitioners and patients in an evidence informed framework.

Her presentation was titled: "The Chiropractic Adjustment and the Neuroendocrine Immune (NEI) Supersystem: Reading our Research Literature Through a Different Lens" and according to Dr. Haas, she and the team are in the process of compiling a broad-category search of research literature on links to the established neurophysiological affects of the chiropractic adjustment to potential impacts on multiple integrated systems, using a dynamical systems model and drawing from multiple fields of study.

The results from this exploration are intended to add to and update our foundational knowledge of the conceptual impacts of vertebral subluxation and of the chiropractic adjustment on these interconnected and integrated systems.

According to Haas the literature search and gathering portion of the project are complete and she reviewed some of the findings from that process and also discussed the challenges. Her focus now is on compiling a document.

Dr. Haas received the Researcher of the Year award from the FVS last year for her efforts in this area and is ideally suited for the project having completed a B.S. in Biochemistry at Bates College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Medical College of Wisconsin, also in Biochemistry. Haas completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston and has a DC degree from LIFE University College of Chiropractic. In addition to her academic background she is in full time clinical practice.

The results from this exploration are intended to add to and update our foundational knowledge of the conceptual impacts of vertebral subluxation and of the chiropractic adjustment on these interconnected and integrated systems.

Just over two years ago the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), Parker University, several United States and International chiropractic regulatory boards and several state and national chiropractic trade associations attacked and threatened chiropractors who educated their patients, the public and their communities about the relationship between chiropractic, subluxation, the nervous system and immune function.

These groups and individuals attempted to muzzle the chiropractic profession, stifle free speech and compel chiropractors to make statements unsupported by science and research.

The attack was met with a full and complete rejection by the chiropractic profession with numerous state, national and international chiropractic trade organizations and other groups within the profession, dozens of them, representing tens of thousands of chiropractors signing a statement rejecting the false claims of the WFC, ACA and Parker University and their supporters.

According to Matthew McCoy DC, MPH "The importance of the kind of tedious research work being conducted by Dr. Hass cannot be overstated. All values must be fought for and vigorously defended. If you thought the Deniers would stop after being exposed like they were - you were sadly mistaken. They will not stop until the management of vertebral subluxation is marginalized to the point that it cannot be practiced and they have stated this publicly."

The Foundation's efforts are supported by a group of dedicated donors intent on protecting the right of the public to receive chiropractic care focused on vertebral subluxation and the right of chiropractors to provide such care.
